Who says you can get good American food only in the States? Cosmic Diner makes it possible for us to taste this type of cuisine even from halfway around the world! That’s right. Bali, Indonesia is located on the opposite side of the Earth from the United States. But when you’re on this tropical island, you can pamper your taste buds with the crunchiness of bacon and the sweetness of a rich milkshake!

Wide variety of menu items for everyone!

What comes to mind when you think of American food? Greasy cheeseburger? Creamy mac and cheese? Or just a simple, yet rich peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Cosmic Diner has it all. And the American foods they serve are legit. They are not just Asian food with a twist of American flavors like most restaurants around here do.

Walking in to the restaurant, you get the idea of how committed they are in living up to the American theme. From afar, you will see the red, white, and blue of the American flag and the black and white checkered style of the building. So classic! And as you open the door, American music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s will welcome you: from Rock n’ Roll-ing Elvis Presley to nostalgically soothing Frank Sinatra.

There are many seating types you can choose from, but I suggest you pick a seat inside the “trailer van.” It’s not a moving vehicle. It’s just a built-in part of the restaurant to make you feel like you’re inside of a trailer as you step in. Just take a look at the picture above. Doesn’t it make you feel like you can reenact a scene from American TV shows?

Cosmic Diner is open every day from 10:00 am to 11:30 pm. If you’re not familiar with American food, they provide another menu with photos of each dish to help you choose. Vegetarian options are also available. And don’t worry about holding off your appetite while you’re looking through the big menu because they will give you complementary popcorn and drinks the moment you sit down!

It's not all greasy, some dishes are actually healthy

Frying and baking in grease are common for American cuisine. Yes, it can be unhealthy. But you can counter that with veggie dishes like this avocado toast I had. Trust me, it’s yummy! And there’s more where that came from.

Check out their salad menu. It ranges from the classic Cesar salad to fruit and eggplant. Probably you’re thinking, why are we ordering salads in an American greasy food haven? But the foods in Cosmic Diner are that good, you should at least have a look! They sure can be a really good appetizer to open up some space in your belly before your cheeseburgers arrive!

If you’re just in a mood for one dish but wanting both healthy and greasy in one plate, no need to worry. Because the best part is: you can add bacon to anything! Just make a special request.

Must try: rich filling milkshakes!

Editor's Note: There's no photo available at the time of writing

These milkshakes are not just bringing all the boys to the yard, but everyone else! A good milkshake is all about good quality ice cream blended perfectly with other ingredients to make it so rich and flavorful! And Cosmic Diner serves exactly that.

You can choose from the classic options like strawberry milkshake or chocolate milkshake. But I got these two of their best: The New Yorker and Mary Poppins. The New Yorker is a rich mix of caramel and chocolate. While Mary Poppins blends the sweetness of caramel with coffee liquor. Oh, yum! Just thinking back about it makes me crave some more.

They are available in two sizes: regular or jumbo. The regular one is served in a tall glass and costs around 50,000 IDR (approximately 3.5 USD). And with just around 1 USD additional charge, you’ll get a taller boot-shaped glass like the ones you can see in the picture above.

One dish here ranges from around 40,000 IDR (approximately 3 USD). And there are side dishes and options for extra ingredients available for any dish, ranging from 15,000 IDR (approximately 1 USD).

Where can you find Cosmic Diner?

In Bali, Cosmic Diner has three outlets. One inside Lippo Mall in Kuta on Jalan Kartika Plaza, one in the middle of Sunset Road’s biggest intersection connecting Jalan Dewi Sri and Jalan Nakula, and another one on By Pass Ngurah Rai Sanur main road. I have visited all three of them. Each has different vibe due to its location, so it all depends on your preferences.

If you enjoy a more quiet time while enjoying your food, I suggest you go to the one in Sanur, which is the less busy part of Bali. The restaurant is also the most spacious compared to the other two. And they open one hour earlier than the other two: at 9:00 am. Which is a perfect time for some waffles and pancakes for breakfast, don’t you think?

The price is not so cheap, but the ambiance and the food are so good!

Cosmic Diner is good not just for those who want to taste American foods, but also for Americans who miss the foods back home yet are too far away to fly back just for a bowl of good mac and cheese. Compared to other diners in Bali, Cosmic Diner is more expensive than average but for me personally, it is worth every bite of food I ate.

If you’re not living in the Sanur area but are interested in visiting its Sanur outlet, there are many other things you can do and places you can visit to make your commute time worth it. Sanur Beach is on the eastern coast of Bali, so it’s best to enjoy the sunrise here. Most locals would go to Sanur for a nice morning stroll or bike ride by the beach.

Tidal wave enthusiasts might want to check this area instead of the common surfing spots like Canggu. The waves here are arguably the best to surf on when you know when and where to catch them.
