Padang is the capital of the province of West Sumatra in Indonesia and is the largest city on the western coast of Sumatra. Before Indonesia’s independence, Padang was one of the major cities in the Dutch East Indies. Considered to be one of the cleanest big cities in Indonesia, Padang features a tropical rainforest climate and is one of Indonesia’s wettest cities, with frequent rainfall throughout the course of the year. There are many old buildings in Padang that still retain their Dutch and Chinese architecture, such as Padang City Hall, De Javaschebank (now Bank Indonesia), Nederlandsch Spaarbank, Geo Wehry & Co, and Escompto Maatschappij Office.
Must-visit landmarks include Adityawarman Museum, Grand Mosque of West Sumatra, Muhammadan Mosque, St. Leo Monastery, and Vihara Buddha Warman (a Buddhist temple). Popular malls include Basko Grand Mall, Plaza Andalas, and Rocky Plaza; while some of the best nature attractions in Padang are Air Manis Beach, Siti Nurbaya Park, and Bung Hatta Nature Reserve. The cuisine of the Minangkabau people is commonly called Padang cuisine. Padang restaurants are common throughout the country and are famous for their spicy food.
Padang is well-connected by road, air, rail and sea, with plenty of public transport within the city and intercity. The city is served by the newly opened Minangkabau International Airport in Ketaping, Padang Pariaman. If you’re coming by the sea, Padang’s Teluk Bayur harbor serves inter-island as well as international routes. Sibinuang and Dang Tuanku provides the train services from Padang (Simpang Haru) to Pariaman and vice versa. If you’re visiting Padang, try staying at one of these hotels or vacation rentals.
