Ask the locals in Surabaya, especially the youngsters, about the best spot to eat and hang out. What will they say? Surabaya Town Square! Also known as SUTOS, this mall has more restaurants than retail shops and it is the only mall in town with an outdoor concept. It is also the only one that is open till 3am on Saturday nights (12am on weekdays)!
De kampoeng: An array of local delicacies
Unlike other malls in Surabaya, 90 percent of its tenants are restaurants, dessert parlors, cafes and bars. You will also find globally popular cafes (e.g. Starbucks, Coffee Bean), restaurants (e.g. XO Chinese restaurant), bakeries (e.g. Bread Talk, J&Co), ice cream parlors (e.g. Haagen Dazs) and bars (Club Foreplay and Eclectic Pub & Lounge). With its variety of dining and drinking options, Surabaya Town Square is the biggest food court in Surabaya!
However, if you want to try Surabaya’s delicacies, go to D'Kampoeng restaurant. Eating here is like dining in the middle of Indonesian traditional food stalls. You will find booths selling various Indonesian foods and beverages. One of the must-try is ‘lontong kikil’. Kikil is beef skin curry served with several pieces of rice cake called 'lontong’. These rice cakes are especially fragrant and comes in the form of cubes. Wrapped in banana leaf, the rice would be steamed to perfection and complements the kikil.
The booths, almost all of them designed with wooden structure, are very unique. They resemble those that belong to food hawkers found on Surabaya’s streets. Each booth is different, depending on the type of food served. Some booths are simply low tables with partitions to put food and utensils while some are taller with a roof.
Free concerts and performances
Nothing is cooler in Surabaya than hanging out in SUTOS on a weekend night. Weekends are usually crowded but it is the most exciting time to visit. On Friday and Saturday nights, this is the place where many Surabaya’s youngsters dine, hang out and see various performances.
This is also one of the few places in Surabaya where you can see concerts of famous artists for free!
If you are a soccer enthusiast, you can join other soccer lovers watching soccer in a cafe or a bar at SUTOS, especially during soccer seasons like the World Cup.
Enjoy 50% discount in the afternoon
If night time is so fabulous, what about day time? Since the front parts of the mall are roofless, hanging out in the afternoon here is not comfortable. The heat in Surabaya can go well above 30 degree Celsius during daytime! However, there is a reason to come here in the afternoon. Most top notch restaurants and cafes give 50 percent discount for lunches, so do visit SUTOS for value-for-money lunches in one of Surabaya’s best restaurants!
Other things to do
There are retail shops like fashion and souvenir shops, but this is not exactly a shopping paradise. However, there are also many other cool things you can do here besides eating, hanging out and watching live performances. You can watch a movie in Cinema 21, shop groceries in Food Mart, work out in Gold’s Gym and sing karaoke at Inul Vizta!
There are always good reasons to go to Sutos
Wherever you are in Surabaya, if you want a lunch in one of the city’s best restaurants, this is the place to go with the 50% discount! If you feel like you want to do something rather than just stay in your hotel room at night, this is also the place! Get a taxi and let the driver take you there!
